So often, women are led by their practitioners through their antenatal care, labor and birth practices, that we have a society filled with uneducated women who will allow just about any intervention because they believe their practitioner always knows best.  They walk like sheep to the slaughter, so to speak, and end up with harmful medications, unnatural birth positions, and having their babies literally cut from their wombs all because they were told it was best for them and their babies.  It is time, we, as birth professionals learn to truth trust in birth and begin practicing what we preach by not only encouraging women to lead us, but teaching them how to move away from the mentalities that are forced on them from the media and society as a whole.  Many women are already there and are choosing to educate themselves and trust in birth in spite of the typical fears that even we carry into our practices.  It is our responsibility to help all women learn how to lead in their care—and time for us to learn how to follow.

  • Gloria LemayMidwifery Interventions—How to Avoid Them for a Better Birth (90 min)

We know about the “cascade of interventions” that sends most North American births down a tunnel of medical mishaps: strip membranes, pit/gel induction, fetal heart continuous monitoring, pain medications, distress in the infant, cesarean, post surgical infection, breastfeeding problems, post partum depression, etc. etc etc.  Iatrogenic meddlesomeness at its most blatant is easy to spot and condemn.   We like to shake our heads, point our fingers and tut-tut-tut about this type of intervention.   BUT….What of the interventions that we don’t see and are guilty of ourselves?  Something that seems as small as turning on a light could be classified as “an intervention”.  Is it an intervention to wear perfume to a birth?  To monitor the heartbeat of the baby every ½ hour?  To leave a clock within the mother’s view?  To watch the mother?  To speak to the mother?  To ask her to take a walk outside?  To tell her to change her position or go to the potty?  To tell her husband to get in the water tub with her?   Do midwives take any time at all to ask themselves these questions?  Join us for this provocative session and see how you can better help the birth of every baby progress without hindrance and thus serve your families more competently and securely than ever before.

In this workshop we’ll discuss the beliefs surrounding birth to see which are based on truth and which on myth. Is birth a “marathon” or does viewing it this way set us up for a long labor?
